Sound performance "GRAMOPHILIA" at BERM DATE, 19th November

GRAMOPHILIA
This project is an exploration of the sonic possibilities with a gramophone and vinyl records. In this particular performance, I use old Bulgarian and Turkish records that I retrieved from abandoned and collapsed houses in the deserted village Tsarino.
A loop machine and effects are used to create different synthesized structures, with the vinyl’s deformed physicality, surface sound and pre-recorded music, as well as tape applied loops, rubber bands and voice.
Quoting the artist Christian Marclay, “As a mass-produced readymade, the record is not only a secondary representation of a live performance or the indexical register of the sonic past. It is also an object with its own unique cultural significance and social function”.
The music made with the found records, suggest a connection with the culture of the Turkish speaking Kardzhali region in Bulgaria. In particular, a metaphorical association is formed with the new purpose and significance the village Tsarino has for the Tsarino foundation, composing something new out of old.
